Wednesday morning, 3 days after taking the anti-biotic at home, his temperature shot up and we called the hospital and were told to come back in. We arrived at the clinic around 1 pm and were there for several hours. Next thing I knew, we were re-admitted back into the hospital. I didn't expect that.
He was given a combination of anti-biotic medications intravenously and it meant that we were going to have to stay at the hospital until they had run their course. Seven days!
Since there were no beds available in the oncology ward when we first got there, we spent two days in the renal (kidney) ward. On Friday, a bed was available in the oncology ward so we were moved to a room there. At 2 am, Saturday morning, we were moved into another room with a mother and infant as an oncology patient had come in through the emergency department and was sent up to the oncology ward but the emergency department had failed to inform the nurses that the patient needed to be isolated from the other patients (viral infection) so they were given our room and we were moved into the room with the infant as we weren't considered a health risk to the other oncology patients. Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep.
The infant in our room was released Saturday morning so we had the room to ourselves until we were released on Tuesday. The anti-biotic concoction that was given to Luke worked and within days he was back to his bright and energetic self. It was so good to see him being himself again.
I was extremely bored being at the hospital for that long but I was thankful that Luke was getting better and I took the time to talk to some of the other parents on the ward with their children. Some had been there for months and some would be there for months more. I considered ourselves lucky that we'd only have to be there a week.
On Tuesday, Luke was given his chemo medication. He was also given some blood to 'top him up' as his white blood cell count was a little low. His medications were changed slightly. One of the blood pressure medicines was changed from every 8 hours to every 6 hours. The anti-biotic was changed to something a little bit stronger and instead of giving it twice on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays we were instructed to give him one dose every day. We were released and home by dinnertime.
