Doxorubicin


Other names: dox, Adria, Adriamycin®

  • A clear red liquid that is injected into a vein.
  • A blood sample is taken before each treatment.
  • May cause sterility in men and menopause in women which may be permanent.

    Side Effects:

  • Burns if leaks under skin.
  • Nausea and vomitting may occur 3-4 hours after treatment and may last up to 12 hours.
  • Urine may be pink or reddish for 1-2 days after treatment.
  • White blood cells will decrease 6-13 days after treatment. Will return to normal 3 weeks after last treatment. At greater risk for infection when counts are low.
  • Platelets may decrease 6-13 days after treatment. Will return to normal 3 weeks after last treatment. May bruise or bleed more easily than usual.
  • Hair loss is common and may begin within a few days or weeks of treatment. Scalp may feel tender. Hair will grow back once treatment stops.
  • Sore mouth may occur a few days after treatment. Mouth sores can lead to infection.
  • Skin may darken in some areas such as hands, elbows and knees.
