What is a protocol? The protocol is the type of treatment given for a specific type of cancer. Most protocols use either surgery, chemotherapy or radiation or any combination of these things. Each case, like each person, is unique and is subject to change during its course. What will Luke have to go through? As of September 20, 1999: Luke's protocol includes surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. For the first 12 weeks he will receive chemotherapy every week (Dactinomycin, Vincristine, and Doxorubicin), after that, he'll get a treatment every three weeks for approx 15 more weeks. A total of approximately 6 months. Somewhere around the 6th week of treatment, Luke will have to go in for surgery and have his right kidney removed and the small tumor on his left kidney will have to be taken off. The week after recovery of surgery, Luke will then undergo a week's worth of radiation treatments. What is chemotherapy? The use of toxic chemicals to destroy cancer cells. What are the side effects of chemotherapy? Each drug has its own side effects.
